Notes from Wiley

Greetings,

Every January for seventeen years I have written a brief column for the OAPGG quarterly newsletter. I haven’t read past editions, but I am sure they contained hopes for positive change and new efforts to help those with a gambling disorder and to give some helpful information to our counselors and administrators. As I think about this column it occurs to me that the best intentions for a new year are not better than a blank slate. Therefore, I hope we can think of our futures as a blank slate that means we are constantly considering how to do our important work.

Our most recent prevalence study shows that 6.0% of adults in Oklahoma qualify for having a gambling disorder while 30% were at risk with 1-3 of the criteria. In spite of these huge numbers, research also indicates that 10% of those that need help actually access the services that are available.

Our current efforts include social media advertising about gambling problems, how to get help, self-exclusion, and other services that are offered. With our efforts to reach those that need help there is always a need for new ideas. My hope is that each of you will contribute to the idea of the blank slate and offer ideas and resources for all of our programs, especially the social media campaign. Please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and like our posts and share them.

There are many trainings planned for the first six months of the year. Please join us in person on March 3 for the 16th annual OAPGG Conference on Problem Gambling.
